“What inspires you to become your best self?”
Some people might think that words don’t make a difference, but they do.
Words can change the way you look, feel and think about things, especially when they are spoken by people you can look up to. This Bar Brother post will address some of these inspiring words, which have been shared throughout the years.
Read them and try to understand the meaning behind the words, because that’s what changed them and will change you.
1. “It always seems impossible until it is done.” ~ Nelson Mandela
A lot of things seem to be impossible, just because nobody has ever done it. But when nobody has never done that certain thing, it does not mean it cannot be done. Going to the moon seemed impossible until someone dared to do it. Sometimes you just have to be the first to dare risk it all to show the rest that it can be done.
2. “You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.” ~ Zig Ziglar
People usually think that they have to be ready for something. They need to prepare. But every Bar Brother will tell you that reading books about calisthenics is not going to give your body the strength to do a front lever or human flag. You have to actually start doing it to be able to master it some day.
3. “It’s always too early to quit.” ~ Norman Vincent Peale
The big problem with quitting is that you will never know how close you were to being successful. Most people quit, because quitting is the easy way out, but why put all the time and effort in something to eventually put your investment to waste? Sometimes you have to quite something good for something better, but never quit for something worse.
4. “One finds limits by pushing them.” ~ Herbert Simon
Most of us think we have found our limit, but what happens when someone puts a gun to your head and asks you to do one more repetition or one more push up? Will you have more juice left? Can you go the extra mile? If you can, you will know you haven’t reached your limit yet. Everytime you reach that limit, the limit becomes a standard, until you have reached a point at which people may call you limitless. That’s their own limit.
5. “I’ve failed over and over and over again. And that is why I succeed.” ~ Michael Jordan
Our concept of succesful people is that they are succesful, because they never fail. In reality the contrary is true, successful people have failed more often than unsuccesful people and because they did, they also succeeded more than unsuccesful people. If person A does 100 push ups and fails at 50, but also succeeds at 50 person and person B does 5 and succeeds at 5, person A is more succesful than B. At the same person A also failed more often. Everytime you fail, remind yourself that success requires failure.
5. “You cannot dream yourself into a character; you must hammer and forge yourself
one.” ~ James Frouge
Whoever tells your that being successful is easy is lying, being successful can be simple, but it definitely is not easy. You have to break old patterns, incorporate new ones and find yourself a new ‘me’, to write your personal story and make it memorable. It takes effort, blood, sweat and tears, but everytime you hammer a little piece of the brick it starts looking more and more like a beautiful sculpture.
6. “You just can’t beat the person who never gives up.” ~ Babe Ruth
How can you beat someone that never gives up? This is one of the foundations of Bar Brothers Groningen: ‘to never give up’. You can be exhausted, you can be injured, but there is one thing you can’t be and that’s someone that gives up. You might not be as skilled as other Bar Brothers, but there is one aspect in which you can always defeat everyone regardless of there experience and that’s in not giving up and not giving in.
7. “The only place where success comes before work is in the dictionary.” ~ Vince Lombardi
Work on your work and success will be the by product of your labor. People who believe that success will simply come are never going to be successful. Some people even think people who have mastered a certain craft, have done so by waiting for the right moment or by pure luck. No man has reached mastery in a craft without spending hours and hours on that particular skill. Those who are unwilling to work hard for their own success will work for someone else who is willing to do so. Make sure you work for your own success by working and not waiting.
8. “Everything you’ve ever wanted is on the other side of fear.” ~ George Adair
Everyone has a natural urge to to run away from their fears, but some people don’t. The difference between successful and unsuccessful people is not that successful people don’t have fear, they do, they just push through. Once you have pushed through your fear, you will realize that there where fear is gone, there is freedom.
